Yo Diddle Diddle
Yo Diddle Diddle

A hip hop-happy dog, a cat with writer’s block and a cow with big dreams are the stars of Yo Diddle Diddle. Based on Tony Wilson’s The Cow Tripped Over the Moon, this hilarious adaptation breathes new life into the age old riddle that has long been a staple of childhood.

Playing in the Studio at Sydney Opera House until Sunday 14 October, this adorable production is the perfect school holiday treat and one we were lucky enough to add to our holiday outings.

Invited into the moonlit farmyard home of three unlikely friends, we discover that Cat is trying her hardest to come up with a rhyme to rival those of Mother Goose but she just can’t seem to get it right. Her pal, Doggy Dog certainly doesn’t seem to have a problem with coming up with fantastic rhymes which only increases her frustration and resolve to nail it. All Cow is interested in, is eating.

It is Cat’s quest for the ideal adventure to inspire her creativity which sees the trio work together to attempt the impossible feat of sending Cow over the moon.

Dog launching Cow into space

Intensely attached to her dish and spoon, we find ourselves rooting for Cow as she tries over and over, with her friends’ help, to launch herself into lunar orbit. And really, that is the message of this beautiful play, that only with the support and encouragement of truly good friends will you have any hope of making your dreams a reality.

With DJ TR!P’s original soundtrack serving as the perfect lyrical foundation to this comical hip hop adventure, rhymes are undoubtedly at the heart of this beautiful production from its concept to the rhyming prose spoken by the fabulous cast.

Set in the intimate Studio venue, my littles felt compelled to offer words of encouragement to Cow on her moon mission. My 3.5yo called out, “go on Cow, you can make it” so invested was he in the story unfolding on stage.

Cast of Yo Diddle Diddle

Will Cow make it over the moon? Will Dog come up with the perfect invention to help his friend? Will Cat ever complete her rhyme?

The costumes, the effects, the stage transitions and most of all the incredible cast of actors make Yo Diddle Diddle one of the most enjoyable theatrical experiences my littles and I have encountered.
